Course Description and Objectives

Knowing how to use CSS to create layouts for your Web pages is an extremely important skill for Web designers, and one with an inital steep learning curve. GCMW 220 and 221 aim to take a new Web designer from knowing very little or nothing about CSS to feeling very confident in their CSS skills. The two classes have been entirely revamped to reflect new developments in the field of Web design and to allow students to continue developing their skills from their current level. Some students have taken one class or the other, and because of new college rules, can't sign up a second time. Therefore, each student should sign up for the class that they have not had. Once in either class, they will be able to choose which track, beginning or advanced, that suits their needs. However, if you have never taken either class, you should enroll in GCMW 220.

Beginning Track:

The beginning track will focus on CSS basics and give a lot of attention to CSS layouts. Some CSS 3 will be used. We will start from the beginning, introducing you to the basic concepts of Web design that you need to know in order to succeed in the class. No special prior skills are needed.

Advanced Track

The advanced track will assume that you have experience with CSS. It will cover more advanced CSS topics such as the more advanced CSS 3 capabilities, and how to use CSS to design your own WordPress theme. Many of my WordPress students have wanted to be able to do this, and this advanced CSS track is the place that it will happen. Students taking the advanced track should have prior experience using CSS to layout Web pages and feel fairly comfortable with it.

Software

This class is not software dependent. While most of our students use Dreamweaver for Web development, it's not mandatory that you use that software. We will discuss less expensive or free alternatives in class.

You will need some image editing software. Adobe Fireworks and Photoshop are wonderful, but again, they aren't mandatory. You can use software that creates .jpg or .gif images. It should also be able to crop the images and to change the number of pixels (adjust the resolution) of the images, as well. Of course, the more creative and original you want your designs to be, the more you'll need in your image editing software. The choices will be individual, depending on your needs and your backgrounds. You can also use the free trial versions of the Adobe software that lasts for 30 days. And, you can go on campus to use the software in the computer labs.
